For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Matthew 25: 34-35
The Works of Mercy
The Servant of God Dorothy Day once said the only Rule of the Catholic Worker was the Works of Mercy, as found in Matthew 25:31-46.
The corporal works of mercy are:
feeding the hungry
giving drink to the thirsty
clothing the naked
offering hospitality to the homeless
caring for the sick
visiting the imprisoned
burying the dead
The spiritual works of mercy are:
admonishing the sinner
instructing the ignorant
counseling the doubtful
comforting the sorrowful
bearing wrongs patiently
forgiving all injuries
praying for the living and the dead
